This week, many corners of the hospitality industry have put forth efforts to feed and fundraise for Ukraine and its refugees. José Andrés’s World Central Kitchen is on the ground in Poland, and beloved New York City restaurant Veselka has become “a rallying point for solidarity with Ukraine,” as critic Ryan Sutton put it on Eater NY. But there are also efforts in which anyone anywhere can take part. Bakers Against Racism is organizing a global bake sale to raise money for World Central Kitchen as well as Sunflower of Peace, Save the Children, the International Rescue Committee, and others. You can find a local participating baker by searching the hashtag #bakeforukraine; some are making traditional Ukrainian baked goods for the occasion, such as my local doughnut shop Fan-Fan, which is selling the pot cheese fritters ponchiki.
A similar international initiative, Hamantashen for Ukraine, is calling on bakers around the world to prepare hamantaschen in the lead up to Purim, which starts March 16, with proceeds going to Polish Humanitarian Action. There’s a list of participating bakeries on the website, including Eater favorites Sofra in Cambridge, Massachusetts; Sister Pie in Detroit; Friends & Family in Los Angeles; and Call Your Mother in D.C. Of course, you can also give directly to causes supporting Ukraine: Here’s a New York magazine list of organizations to consider. Torani salted egg yolk syrup, a Chris Chiappa egg sculpture, and Anna Hezel's tinned fish matchbox. Things to buy
