There’s no stopping the tinned fish trend. The restaurateurs behind popular New York City restaurants Hart’s, Cervo’s, and the Fly announced last week that they’re selling their very own collection of tinned fish. Called Minnow, the line launched with tinned salmon, sardines, and cod liver, and is available at the restaurants as well as directly from the Minnow website. According to Eater NY, the fish is just the start of an eventual expansion into selling other pantry goods, but kicking it off with fish is perhaps the splashiest way to make an entrance into the category these days.
Tinned fish was everywhere in restaurants in 2019 and, since the start of the pandemic, has definitively found a place in American pantries. The Minnow news arrived on the heels of the launch of another new tinned fish brand I mentioned last week. And it was less than two years ago that Fishwife debuted with cutesy branding that seemed to declare it the cool new thing in conservas.
But this latest launch prompted some people in my text threads to ask, do people really eat that much tinned fish? And what should one do with it? To them I say, yes, and also, there are resources for that: There’s this Eater guide to buying and eating the stuff, and The Magic of Tinned Fish: Elevate Your Cooking with Canned Anchovies, Sardines, Mackerel, Crab, and Other Amazing Seafood by Chris McDade, which published last year. If, however, you’re already all in on the tinned fish trend, you might also be interested in buying this “Tinned Fish” tee from Wear Your Snacks.
