Atlanta has a love affair with all things mini right now: tapas, mini martinis, shareable small plates, and small menus. In this roundup, find new additions like Madeira Park (with small bites and half-glass wine pours), Boqueria at Colony Square (with tapas and mini cocktails), Madre Selva (with small ceviche plates), and Mihnwa Spirits (with its tight menu). Tiger Sun and its multi-course mini cocktail experience, La Metro and its tapas, and Small Fry (come on, it’s in the name) are more examples of this trend, though there’s nothing small about the flavors here.

While the Eater 38 highlights Atlanta restaurant institutions, old standbys, and neighborhood essentials, this map spotlights the new places people are flocking to right now.

Madeira Park

The long-awaited Madeira Park has opened in Poncey-Highland. James Beard Award-winning chef Steven Satterfield of Miller Union teamed up with his business partner Neal McCarthy and sommelier Tim Willard of Dive Wine pop-up to open the wine bar and restaurant. And it’s a major vibe already. The wine list includes rare Old World treasures by the glass (and half glass) and bottle, and the food menu is the perfect snacking accompaniment — get the eight-minute egg with a creamy yolk, anchovy, and potato chip with a glass of Chablis. The bar is popular, so come early to snag a seat. Ask sommelier Jade Palmer for her hidden, handwritten (in pristine handwriting, mind you) wine list with deep cut, limited allocation bottles.

Minhwa Spirits

One of the trendiest places to eat and drink right now is at Atlanta’s own soju distillery in Doraville, Minhwa Spirits, by James Kim and Ming Han Chung. It houses a Korean food pop-up Ganji, by chefs Jess Kim and Jun Park, and Postern Coffee. The vibrant purple rice bowl with fried chicken, kimchi slaw, potato salad, egg, spinach, and radishes is a must-get here. Minhwa makes its own soju, a Korean spirit made with rice, much like an earthier vodka. The Strawberry Fields cocktail is a must, made with strawberry, white peach tea, and basil foam, topped with an edible flower. It’s balanced and not too sweet, with the basil offering plenty of fresh aromatics.

Boqueria at Colony Square

The newly opened Spanish tapas joint, Boqueria at Colony Square, has quickly become a local haunt. The restaurant, with locations in New York City, Washington D.C., Chicago, Nashville, and more, boasts a menu of classic tapas (croquetas, pan con tomate, and pulpo), charcuterie, and flatbreads priced under $15. Larger entrees are also available. There is plenty of Spanish wine and vermouth to choose from, including mini martinis during happy hour.

Small Fry

People are flocking to Small Fry  Atlanta Dairies in Reynoldstown for all the deep fried goodness. Fried shrimp, chicken, and fishcake sandwiches, including the vodka Parmesan fried chicken sando, are popular. There’s a side of shoestring fries, and end the meal with a rotating offering of desserts including an olive oil cake with lemon cream. The sandwiches are big, be warned, and messy. But they pack plenty of flavor.

The Adair Park neighborhood is getting a glow-up with new businesses opening in the area in recent weeks. Ryokou is one of them — an omakase restaurant by chef Leonard Yu of Michelin-starred Omakase Table. Ryokou has a tasting menu of eight courses for $195 a person. The small plates include dishes like Aomori gai (a sampling of the best seafood from the city of Aomori in Japan), awabi kimo (steamed, thinly sliced abalone over a rice and abalone liver mixture), nigiri, and smoked wagyu. Wine and sake pairings are also available for an additional fee. Reservations required.

Madre Selva

Atlanta’s newest ceviche bar is already becoming a hit on social media. The breezy, coastal vibes at Madre Selva in Uptown Atlanta are a nod to the Peruvian flavors it serves up. Expect Peruvian-style ceviches, tiraditos, and causa on the menu, along with creative, tropical cocktails with a heavy emphasis on the spirit, pisco. Madre Selva serves lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch.

Tiger Sun

Cocktail bar Tiger Sun has opened inside a refurbished vintage tour bus in Reynoldstown. It comes from the same team behind Ladybird Grove & Mess Hall, Muchacho, Ranger Station, Strangers in Paradise, and the Electric Room. There’s lots to take in here: first, it’s inside a vintage tour bus. Second, it’s an “omakase-inspired” experience, meaning there are only 18 seats with themed courses of cocktails and light bites. The opening menu was inspired by the 80’s classic, Karate Kid, and offered two menus to choose from: Wax On and Wax Off. Menu themes will change throughout the year. Reservations are available now.

Lucky Star

Lucky Star at Star Metals in West Midtown has created quite the buzz around Atlanta. The Taiwanese cafe cocktail bar comes from chef Jason Liang and John Chen from Michelin-starred Brush, Momonoki, and Momo Cafe. It serves breakfast pastries beginning at 8 a.m. and transitions to noodle soups, sandwiches, and scallion pancakes for lunch and dinner. There are high expectations from Liang and Chen, though the food and cocktail menu needs to find its sea legs. Only a select few cocktails are available each night (those underlined on the online menu), and the food is meant for small bites, except the beef noodle soup, which is a large serving. Vibey and loungey, every seat was full on a recent Thursday night, even as the menu (hopefully) works out its kinks.

Delbar - Buckhead

Atlanta knows Michelin-recommended Delbar, the crowd-favorite Persian restaurant by chef Fares Kargar known for tablescapes filled with mezze and brunch boards. Now, there’s a new third location in Buckhead (at the corner of Peachtree Road and West Paces Ferry Road), and it’s also serving lunch. There is an indoor and outdoor bar, with the restaurant serving up its favorites of hummus, kashk bademjoon, kebabs, and stunning tahdig rice dishes.

Avize Modern Alpine

Chef Karl Gorline (formerly at Watershed and Atlas) opened his highly anticipated Alpine restaurant, Avize, on October 3. The renovated restaurant is in the former Nick’s Westside space in West Midtown. The menu focuses on a mashup of European culinary influences, a.k.a. Alpine cuisine.

The restaurant is working with a local farm in Bremen, GA to source seasonal produce. Gorline is particularly excited to serve a hay-smoked, dry-aged duck on the menu, in addition to roast chicken with a lemon caper sauce, venison tartare with blueberries, buckwheat, and walnuts, and striped bass with turnips, salsa verde, and anchovy emulsification. Also, expect foie gras, fermented carrot bolognese, and caviar during dinner service. Bar Avize, a more casual version of the restaurant with wine and small bites, is expected to open this month. It is attached to the restaurant, in the former Tin Tin wine bar space.
