When in Austin, eat breakfast tacos.
| Pueblo Viejo

Austin is a city obsessed with breakfast tacos. The eggy creations are how locals start their mornings and a first stop for visitors.

Since the world of breakfast tacos is limitless in Austin, Eater gathered the best of the city’s morning taco offerings. Austin’s best breakfast tacos range from classics, like Mi Trailita y Mas and Joe’s Bakery, vegan and vegetarian ones from Bouldin Creek Cafe (also a great spot to stay and work with the free wi-fi), and migas from Veracruz All Natural, which will open a new location this year.

Eater has updated this map to rotate out Paco’s Tacos, Marcelino’s, and Taco Joint.

Ken's Subs Tacos & More

Per the name, the very casual Windsor Hills restaurant is a great destination for breakfast tacos, which Ken’s serves until the restaurant closes after lunch. Enter the bright yellow dining room to create your dream breakfast taco combination with stuffings like eggs, potatoes, meats (ham, barbacoa, chorizo, etc.), and more. You’ll receive efficient service and extra-large, filling tacos.

Mi Trailita Y Mas

As the name suggests, this taqueria was once a trailer but is now a neighborhood favorite in Windsor Park. The team at the small restaurant makes tortillas to order, so while there is online to-go ordering, it’s better to get your tacos fresh. The migas are a standout, but don’t be afraid to build your own breakfast concoction.

Vaquero Taquero

The selling point of Vaquero Taquero is overstuffed tacos with melted mozzarella cheese that’s crispy on the edges. There are two locations to get your tacos — this spot in North Campus has outdoor seating and coffee (though indoors is reopening soon), and the cantina in Downtown Austin has indoor and outdoor seating. Solid options include scrambled machacado and eggs, charro beans with cheese, and potato, egg, and cheese. Order online to get your tacos faster.

Mi Madre's

Open for 35 years, this Tex-Mex restaurant is a Cherrywood classic. Spice lovers should choose the house-made machacado with pico and eggs to shake up their breakfast taco routine. The cute indoor dining room is sprinkled with Mexican knick-knacks like figurines and lotería cards, and the outdoor patio has a good view of the bustle of Manor Road. There’s also online to-go orders if you’re in a hurry.

Veracruz All Natural

Handmade tortillas, fresh ingredients, and excellent salsas have catapulted this series of trailers and restaurants by sisters Reyna and Maritza Vasquez into the breakfast taco stratosphere. This location is arguably the best spot to explore the offerings at Veracruz, as it shares a greenery-filled food truck park with Desnudo’s coffee experts. Some locations, like the one at the Line Austin hotel in Downtown, have indoor dining, too. Ordering online is definitely wise at the Webberville outpost. Don’t skip the migas taco.

Tamale House East

The fourth-generation restaurateurs from East Austin’s Vasquez-Valera family sling classic, affordable, hangover-busting tacos, plus migas and queso that make for a winning combination. Tamale House is another spot where the fluffy tortillas are half of the appeal, but its tamales are great, too. Make the perfect breakfast dish by topping your choice of tamale with an over-easy egg. The outdoor patio and friendly dining room are big draws, too. If in a hurry, order to-go or online.

Joe's Bakery & Coffee Shop

This Holly neighborhood restaurant is a classic East Austin institution (and one of the James Beard Foundation’s Classic Restaurants in 2023). It’s famous for extra-crispy bacon — the secret is, it’s battered before frying — so bacon, egg, and cheese is a good move here. Settle into the indoor dining area, which gives a full view of the pan dulces, or enjoy your tacos with fresh air out on the small outdoor patio.

Tacos Guerrero

Parked in an insurance company’s lot, this cash-only Holly truck serves up delightful breakfast tacos with fresh corn tortillas, eggs, meats, beans, potatoes, and nopales. The migas with extra-crispy corn strips are a favorite among those in the know, and be sure to try the molcajete salsa. There’s a small outdoor dining area, and remember — bring cash.

Bouldin Creek Café

Austin’s vegan and vegetarian populations need breakfast tacos, too, and even carnivores will enjoy the occasional break from chorizo. This Bouldin Creek vegetarian cafe is a great bet for eggless and/or meatless tacos. Opt for either eggs or tofu with vegetables and cheeses, available in both traditional and vegan versions. Then, soak in the old-school Austin vibes in the eclectic dining room or out on the patio. Diners can also order to-go or online.

El Primo

With simple but tasty offerings and some of the fluffiest tortillas in town, the tiny Bouldin Creek cart is South Austin’s most beloved breakfast taco destination. The migas with ham is an epic taco. Be warned: There will likely be a line, and the cart only accepts cash, so be sure to get there early and bring cash. The outdoor dining area is small, so ordering online is smart if you plan to take your tacos elsewhere.

Papalote Taco House

With an interior Mexican bent to its menu and more filling options than most places, this is a taco restaurant that you’ll be glad has two locations — one in North Austin and one in South Austin. Customize Papalote’s breakfast tacos to include chicharrones, squash, nopales, and more. Whatever your filling, the soft, bright yellow corn tortillas are the move here. While the restaurants are clean and friendly, you won’t lose anything by taking your order to-go.

El Tacorrido

Drive-thru breakfast tacos are the dream, and El Tacorrido delivers. The taco mini-chain has multiple locations across the city (this one in Bouldin Creek and others in North Austin, Bouldin Creek, and Brentwood), offering convenient and great breakfast tacos. Find corn and flour tortillas with the usual fillings (chorizo, avocado, potatoes, nopales), plus migas and chilaquiles.

Pueblo Viejo

The Austin mini-chain has it all: great tacos, online ordering, and several locations across the city. Pueblo’s East Riverside location is a restaurant with indoor dine-in service, while the others exist in truck form in Dawson at Cosmic Coffee, McKinney at Meanwhile Brewing, and up North at St. Elmo Brewing and Govalle at Flitch Coffee. The Don Chago taco, a must-order, is the best combination of beans, cheese, bacon, and avocado. For more seating options, dine at Pueblo’s trucks, which are all hosted at sites with indoor and outdoor dine-in areas.
