Want That Juicy Burger From ‘The Menu’? They’re Serving It at Irv’s This Month

Irv’s Burgers has commenced a very cool collaboration with Searchlight Pictures and its 2022 film The Menu, starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Ralph Fiennes. The fictional thriller set at a fine dining restaurant involves a burger and will be on sale at the film-appropriate price of $9.95 (including fries). And just like the movie, the burger special comes with two griddled patties, thinly shaved onions, American cheese, special sauce, and pickles on a plush sesame seed bun.

Irv’s, which is still operated in part by longtime owner Sonia Hong, became a West Hollywood institution with years of Hong’s delightful doodles on each paper plate with the phrase, “Just For You.” Reopened last year after a four-year hiatus, The Menu burger special will be available at Irv’s Santa Monica Boulevard location for the entire month of January. Searchlight is collaborating with Irv’s to help promote the release of the film on Blu-ray (on January 17, which comes with plenty of extra content and behind-the-scenes footage) as well as digital download, released yesterday.

A hundred years of delicious Mexican food

El Cholo’s flagship location on Western Avenue represents a century-long history of a Los Angeles legend. The New York Times gives the iconic Mexican restaurant a lengthy feature with vignettes and deep history from owner Ron Salisbury, whose grandparents first opened Sonora Cafe in 1923 nearby the LA Memorial Coliseum before renaming it El Cholo in 1925.

Eater LA contributor and Longbeachize writer Brian Addison reports that a new California Mediterranean restaurant called Marlena from Robert Smith, who was a director of operations at Pizza Antica (part of a Bay Area restaurant group) for years is opening in the former Russo’s space.

Kebab Shop in El Segundo

Rapidly expanding San Diego-based the Kebab Shop, which slices thinly sliced doner-style chicken or lamb-beef kebab, has opened its fifth LA-area location in El Segundo as of December 30. The highly customizable menu features everything from wraps and salads to loaded fries with even standalone grilled chicken kebab and beef meatball plates. Open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

New sandwiches to know about in Koreatown

Local cafe and store Open Market unveils a new sandwich menu from chefs Andrew Marco and Ralph Hsiao with tuna kimbap, Hainan chicken, and Hill Street pork chop added to its original lineup of Olympic (lemongrass chicken), Normandie (brisket provolone), and Mariposa (a vegan sandwich with grilled al pastor mushrooms). Last year the Hainan chicken sandwich started as a clever riff on the popular chicken and rice dish before becoming a menu mainstay.
