A NYC Brasserie Featured in the ‘Sex and the City’ Reboot Will Open Near the White House

An art-nouveau-styled brasserie featured on the most recent episode of And Just Like That..., the Sex and the City reboot on HBO Max, is opening an outpost in the long-empty, historic Federal-American National Bank building (699 14th Street NW).

The brasserie, La Grande Boucherie, will land in the building’s main banking hall, while restaurateur Emil Stefkov of The Group NYC will also bring a sophisticated Japanese restaurant, Washoku Room, to the space that fronts 14th Street, and an Italian indoor/outdoor Italian trattoria called Olio é Piu to the G Street side, according to the Washington Business Journal.

The restaurant group’s Midtown NYC La Grande Boucherie, which opened in November 2020, made a cameo in episode 8 of And Just Like That...., in which Charlotte takes Lily out to lunch at the airy Parisian-style brasserie so that they can have a mature conversation following an incident in which Lily accidentally walks in on her parents engaging in some sexual activity.

The restaurant was also an ambitious architectural project, inspiring a forthcoming documentary film for details like a 150-year-old glass ceiling imported from France near the bar and a heated floor in the outdoor plaza. The team says La Grande Boucherie outlets will all be interesting architectural projects rather than cookie cutter in the approach. The D.C. location will be the fifth in the Boucherie family, including one in Midtown plus outlets in NY’s Union Square and two in the West Village.

The National Bank Building has been vacant since the mid-1990s when Hahn Shoes closed. Over the years, the building was eyed for several projects, including a “failed effort to open an Armenian Genocide Museum.” Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen also considered turning the structure into a pop culture museum, according to the Washington Business Journal.

The Group NYC also owns two other Washoku Rooms, Omakase Room by Mitsu and Kaiseki Room by Yamada, both in New York City. The first Olio é Piu, also coming to D.C., is in Greenwich Village.
