Happy new year! I am not the biggest fan of making New Year’s resolutions, only because I don’t have a whole lot of confidence that I’ll stick to them. They’re also rarely fun. Still, I recognize the changing of the year as a time to take stock, and so this year, I am resolving to spend less. Or at least, resolving to think more about my spending in an attempt to spend less. For me, this will likely mean not eating out as much and taking a pause on buying anything but the bare necessities. (See? No fun!)
And it’s not that I shopped a ton before, but since attempting to put the kibosh on shopping, I’ve only become more eager to peek at the sales in my inbox or click on the latest Strategist post. Recently though, I’ve come up with a solution to avoid this FOMO, a loophole to my spend-less rule. (Like I said, I’m no good at this resolution thing.) While I’m still not allowed to buy things for myself, I’ve found that I can easily justify spending on others. Birthday gifts, housewarming gifts, host gifts — I will take any opportunity to scroll the internet to find the perfect thing to buy for someone else.
I’m not necessarily recommending this as a viable strategy if you’ve made a similar resolution this year. But I’ve found it to be a not-so-disastrous outlet for working out the shoppies. Plus, as ever, I am finding joy in perusing the online shops to find things for you, Add to Cart reader, to buy.

Last week, Amy McCarthy took a closer look at Giada De Laurentiis’s online shop Giadzy, which, as you’ll see, is ripe with inspiration for gift-giving, including items like bluefin tuna filets and a 12-year-aged balsamic vinegar that many of us might not feel justified purchasing for ourselves.

Umamicart and scent brand Emme have teamed up on a “Cut Fruit Is My Love Language” candle, a surprising first for the scented candle genre. It smells like lychee, golden pear, apples, and dates.
- These chocolate sardines would have been a fun stocking stuffer. Now they can be a fun “just thinking of you” gift for the person who enjoys both chocolate and sardines.
