Holiday shopping season is down to the wire. Tonight is the first night of Hanukkah; Christmas is a mere week away. If you’re the organized type, it’s likely your gift-giving list has been checked off for days now and you’ve shifted from shopping mode to gift wrapping in front of the TV or menu planning (in which case, here are a couple ideas for dessert).
But if you, like me, have left things for the last minute, now’s the time to frantically scan gift guides for things that might still ship in time, or better yet, have IRL, in-person shopping availability. For some suggestions, here are a few of my favorite gift guides from the Strategist: This list of 50 extremely small gifts, which includes a delightful miniature Helen Levi mug and these fun corn on the cob holders; this gift guide for gifts from Black-owned businesses; and this one for things from Asian-owned brands, all under $50. Incidentally, both of those latter two gift guides feature items that are available at the Eater x Shopify holiday market, and today is the last day to shop in person in New York and LA.
However, even if it does feel much too late to procure anything to wrap, hope is not lost, as the easiest gift to give last-minute is a subscription that’ll arrive in the new year. It’s the gift that says, “I totally planned to get you a gift for later.” Here’s a list of snack boxes that fit the bill. And for something more niche, Jaya Saxena recommends Rent Mother Nature, which lets you lease farm animals and land and the food products they produce.

DeVonn Francis’s Yardy World put together a gift box that’s on sale now, including the Yardy World snack mix, spice rub, and recipe cards. Get it for yourself to have a cooking project to look forward to in the post-holiday comedown.
- Mr. Espresso is selling a
coffee and panettone set, featuring the panettone from Fiasconaro, the Sicilian bakery Dayna Evans recently visited, where, she writes, “the commitment to preserving the craft is as strong as the smell of sweet bread.”
- Little Owl, the New York City restaurant located in the ground floor of a building best known for its appearance on
Friends, recently released merch featuring illustrations of that iconic Greenwich Village building.
-
Off Menu is a newish site that allows you to shop
a range of New York City restaurant merch, including clothing, food items, and decor. If you’re looking for a gift for a fan of New York restaurants, start here. Until coming across the site, I didn’t realize there was a whole slew of Mister Softee merch, including a musical toy truck and beach towel.
- Here’s
a planter shaped like a loaf of bread. Plant a meyer lemon tree and call it breadfruit. (And with that terrible dad joke, it is clearly time for me to log off for the year.)
Thanks for reading! I’ll be back in 2023. And if you know someone who could benefit from some weekly shopping inspiration (perhaps you’d like to start dropping hints for next year’s gift-giving season), please forward this email to a friend. — Monica |
